Jazz Icarus, 1944

Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse was a French artist known for his strong use of colour and bright, bold imagery. A key player in the fauvism movement, before moving onto a more classical style. In 1947, while bedridden he produced a book called Jazz, with a number of images. This Icarus, was one of them, depicting the fall of Greek mythological figure Icarus, after flying too close to the sun.
