A life-size photograph of Helianthus annuus, or the Sunflower. Indigenous to the Americans, archaeological evidence suggests it was first domesticated in Mexico circa 2600BC. Growing up to three metres tall and with a flower head growing to 30cm in diameter its seeds are used to produce sunflower oil, which is used for cooking, margarine and as a bio-diesel.
